The catastrophic floods in the Guadiana River basin since 1500 CE

The task of retrieving information about past flood events is very important to reconstruct series data. In this work, a wide range different sources including newspapers, technical reports, and books was consulted in order recover catastrophic Badajoz (Spain). A set 37 floods the Guadiana River that occurred winter months (DJFM - December, January, February, March) have been recovered since 1500 CE. This strong seasonality constrain due influence large-scale circulation patterns affecting climate Iberian Peninsula. Moreover, it found there clear difference between higher number 19th 20th centuries substantial lower value 16th–18th centuries. Finally, we evaluated long-term evolution inter-annual variability precipitation main atmospheric govern Iberia (NAO EA modes) for period 1851–1985. analysis suggests most extreme observed (26 events) correspond consecutive with than usual precipitation, driven part by unusual values both NAO modes variability.
